Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure used to increase or decrease the size of labia. The labia are the folds of the skin on either side of the vaginal opening. The inner folds are called labia minora and the outer folds are called labia majora. Many women wish to undergo labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons or medical reasons. The labiaplasty procedure involves correcting either labia minora or labia majora.

Labiaplasty is a minor procedure and can boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Why Should I Undergo Labiaplasty?

Women may undergo labiaplasty due to the following reasons:

  • To reduce the physical discomfort during exercises, physical activities, or sexual activities
  • To enhance health and hygiene
  • To improve comfort and confidence by reducing the asymmetry of the labia minora or labia majora
  • For a gender-affirming process to convert male genitalia into female genitalia

Who Can Undergo Labiaplasty?

If you want to undergo labiaplasty, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You should be between the ages of 18 and 50
  • You should be healthy

What Happens Before the Procedure?

Before undergoing the procedure, you will have an initial appointment with your surgeon. The surgeon will ask about your expectations and why you want to undergo the procedure. The surgeon will explain about the procedure along with the possible risks. The surgeon also suggests to undergo certain presurgical tests to ensure the procedure is safe for you. The surgeon also gives you instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. The surgeon may ask to stop using certain medications before the procedure.

How is the Labiaplasty Procedure Performed?

Before beginning the procedure, your labia and the skin around it will be cleaned. Then, you will be given general or local anesthesia. Labiaplasty can be performed using different techniques and the surgeon will decide it based on whether your labia needs to be reshaped or resized.

Labia Reduction Procedure

The following are the two common techniques for reducing your labia:

  • Trim procedure: This technique is used when the inner labia is longer than the outer labia. During this trim procedure, the surgeon will trim excess labial tissue to make it even with the labia majora.
  • Wedge procedure: If the surgeon uses this approach, then a wedge or pie-shaped piece of excess tissue from either one or both sides of the labia minora is removed. This technique will help give a most natural look to your labia.

Labia Enlarging Procedure

It is the fastest type of labioplasty that involves injecting fat into the labia. For this, you will be given anesthesia and a small portion of fat will be collected from another part of your body using liposuction. Now, the collected fat is injected into your labia. Instead of collecting fat, hyaluronic acid can also be used for labia enlargement.

Gender-Affirming Surgery

It is an extensive and more invasive type of labioplasty. This is used as a part of the gender-affirming process. For this, the surgeon creates inner and outer vagina lips using tissue from the penis. The incisions will be covered with stitches.

Aftercare and Recovery After the Procedure

Before you get discharged, the surgeon will give you the required instructions to be followed after the procedure. You should take proper care following your surgery. You should use prescribed medications to reduce your pain and inflammation. You should avoid physical activities for about six weeks after the procedure. You should also avoid sexual activity for up to six weeks after surgery. If you return to physical activities too early, it can cause pain, and infection and can delay your recovery.

Based on the surgery you had, you can mostly get back to work after a week of surgery. But if your job requires lifting heavy objects, or other physical activity, you need to take rest for a longer period. You can check with your surgeon about resuming your work.

Results After the Procedure

Though the results of some cosmetic procedures are not long-lasting, the results of labioplasty are permanent. If the labia enlarging procedure is performed, then you may need touch-ups occasionally. Otherwise, you do not need to undergo surgery again. If you are planning to have a child, then you should postpone undergoing this procedure. This is because having children after the procedure can affect the results of labioplasty.
