Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty is one of the popular cosmetic procedures that focuses on reshaping the nose to change its overall appearance. It is also known as a nose job or nose reshaping. A nose job can also fix the structural defects in the nose that cause breathing issues. Surgery focuses on reconstructing and shaping the bone, cartilage, or skin to improve the appearance.

Dr B.R.N Padmini has extensive experience performing rhinoplasty on patients of different age groups. She closely works with you to ensure the best possible results.

Why Should I Undergo Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery is effective at changing the shape, proportion, and size of your nose. Rhinoplasty is helpful for you in the following cases:

  • To correct birth defects
  • To improve breathing issues
  • To change the overall appearance of your nose
  • To fix breathing issues after an injury, disease, or burns
  • To fix a facial fracture
  • To fix nasal asymmetry
  • To fix wide, large, or upturned nostrils
  • To fix oversized nostrils
  • To correct the nose tip that is flat or got pressed to the face

Am I Eligible for Rhinoplasty?

You can undergo rhinoplasty if you qualify for the following:

  • You should be physically healthy
  • You have finished your facial growth
  • You should be a non-smoker
  • You should have realistic expectations from the procedure

Initial Consultation and Preparing for Rhinoplasty

When you visit our plastic surgeon, she will give a detailed description about the procedure and will also know about your expectations from the procedure. The surgeon will examine you and will ask you about your skin type. She also takes photographs and will ask about your medical history, age, and previous surgeries. You should also inform the surgeon about the medications that you use.

Before performing the procedure, the surgeon instructs you to do the following:

  • Get the required lab tests done
  • Avoid using anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the risk of bleeding
  • Avoid smoking
  • Arrange someone to drive you home following the procedure

How is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis. To make you feel comfortable during the procedure, the surgeon will give you either general anesthesia or local anesthesia. Now, the surgeon will make an incision on the underside of the nose to access the bone and cartilage. Now, the skin covering the nose bone and cartilage is raised. Using a scalpel, the surgeon then removes or reshapes the cartilage and bone to give a new structure to your nose or to fix the deviated septum. If required, the surgeon adds cartilage grafts that are taken from the ear or from deep inside the nose. Once the underlying structure of the nose is reshaped, nasal skin and tissue are redraped and the incisions will be closed.

The entire procedure can take about one hour to three hours.

Recovery From the Procedure

After completing the procedure, you can go home on the same day in most cases. The surgeon may place a small plastic splint to reduce swelling and support the nose. You might have swelling around the nose and eyes for several weeks.  You may also notice facial swelling during the morning for around one year after the procedure. The surgeon will give you medications to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection.

There are no major restrictions to be followed post-procedure. You can continue walking and can have a regular diet as usual. In most cases, you can resume your daily activities within a week. However, you should wait up to 3 months and should check with your doctor before performing heavy physical activities.

Results of the Procedure

You can start noticing the change in your nose appearance after a week. But it can take up to one year to fully refine and settle into its new shape. The results of the procedure are long-lasting.

  • Swelling around the nose
  • Scarring and redness
  • Reactions to anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Numbness
  • Small holes in the septum
  • Residual deformity
What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery can fix both structural, functional, and cosmetic problems with the nose. If rhinoplasty is performed for a cosmetic reason, it can change the overall appearance of the nose. It can also modify the bridge of your nose, can fix oddly shaped nostrils, etc. From a functional perspective, rhinoplasty can improve breathing, reduce snoring, and can fix a deviated septum.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

A closed rhinoplasty procedure makes incisions inside the nose. It is suitable for patients who need small corrections to the nostrils, nasal bridge, and nasal tip. It causes less swelling and the recovery is also faster.

An open rhinoplasty makes incisions across the columella. It is effective for major reshaping of the nose. It causes visible scarring and the recovery is also longer.

Can I have other procedures along with rhinoplasty?

You can have other cosmetic procedures during rhinoplasty. A chin advancement or chin implant is the commonly performed procedure along with rhinoplasty to make your nose proportionate with the rest of your face.
