Arm Lift Surgery

As you get older or if you lose or gain weight, several changes can happen in your body. The skin on the upper arms may also lose its elasticity and the skin may sag and droop. The arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, can offer a solution to this problem. Arm lift is a cosmetic procedure that focuses on removing excess and sagging skin from the elbow to the armpit. This procedure enhances the appearance of your arms which diet and exercise cannot do.

If you have sagging and loose skin on your upper arms and want to get rid of it with an arm lift surgery, meet Dr B.R.N Padmini today. Her 13 years of surgical experience have made her an expert in this field.

Who Needs an Arm Lift?

If the underside of your arms is sagging and becomes loose due to excess fat and skin, then an arm lift is right for you. You may have sagging skin and drooping upper arms due to the following:

  • Skin loses its elasticity as you get older
  • Losing a lot of weight in short span
  • Lymphedema
  • Certain genetic factors

Am I Eligible for an Arm Lift?

If you want to undergo an arm lift surgery, you need to satisfy the following:

  • Have loose and sagging skin in your upper arms
  • Should be an adult of any age group with a stable weight
  • You should be healthy
  • Should not have medical conditions that can increase the risk of surgery
  • Should be a non-smoker
  • Should have realistic expectations

Starts With Your Initial Consultation

No two people will have the same body. Every patient has unique expectations and needs. To make sure that you are happy with the results of surgery, Dr B.R.N Padmini develops a customized treatment plan as per your needs. She first reviews your overall health and medical history to ensure you are suitable for an arm lift. She will ask you about your expectations and will let you know if they are realistic. She will also explain the procedure along with its risks and benefits. She will answer any questions you may have. You should also inform her about your previous surgeries and any existing allergies.

Preparing for the Procedure

Before performing the procedure, the surgeon asks you for the following:

  • Get your lab tests or a medical evaluation done
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid using anti-inflammatory medications as they increase the risk of bleeding
  • Arrange someone to drive you home
  • Maintain a stable weight before the procedure

What To Expect During the Procedure?

  • During an arm lift, you will be given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to make you feel comfortable during the procedure.
  • An elliptical incision is made along the underside of your arm from the axilla to the elbow. The amount of excess skin is the major determinant for the length of the incision.
  • An elliptical piece of skin, dermis and fat is removed and the two edges of the incision are sutured in a careful aesthetic manner.

SHORT SCAR ARM LET

  • After a transverse axillary incision, here, the skin is tightened with excision of skin confined to the armpit. The skin is pulled towards the armpit like a sock and then closed. This procedure is reserved for patients with minimal excessive skin only in the proximal part of the arm.

L-BRACHIOPTA1STRY

  • Here an L-shaped pattern of excision is followed, the long limb along the length of the arm, the short limb extending at right angles through the axilla and along the lateral chest wall
  • This procedure is indicated in patients with very lax skin in the arm and upper lateral chest as in post bariatric weight loss.

Based on the amount of skin to be removed, an arm lift procedure can take up to 3 hours. In most cases, you can go home after a few hours of the procedure.

Recovery From an Arm Lift Surgery and Results

After the procedure, you will be given a bandage to wear on your arms for about a week. You may have swelling and bruising in the first week and it eventually reduces over time. You should be very careful while moving your arm for the first few weeks. You can do light work after a week without using your arms too much. After a week, you should let the scar dry while resting or sitting. For about six weeks, you should avoid intensive sports, lifting heavy objects and performing heavy workouts. After six weeks, you can lift heavy objects and can move your arms freely.

You may also develop scars after the procedure. The surgeon gives you a scar cream to be used after the wound is closed. The scars eventually fade, take your skin colour and become less visible.

The results of the procedure are visible quite after the procedure. But it takes up to three months to assess the final results after the swelling disappears. Your arms look firm, slimmer, and tight after the procedure. The results last for a long time, but the results get affected as your skin loses its elasticity with age.
