Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty is a procedure used to remove excess fat, skin and tissues from the breasts and reduce their size. This procedure helps to achieve a breast size that is in proportion with your body. It also reduces the discomfort linked to large breasts and enhances your appearance.

If you are thinking to undergo breast reduction, talk to Dr B.R.N Padmini, who is an expert in all kinds of aesthetic breast surgeries. She can help you understand the procedure along with its benefits.

Who Needs Breast Reduction Procedure?

If you have large breasts, it can cause both physical and emotional stress. A breast reduction surgery is helpful for patients who experience the following due to extremely large breasts:

  • Severe and chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Difficulty taking part in some physical activities
  • Poor self-esteem due to large breasts
  • Difficulty to find the best fitting bras and clothing
  • Poor body posture
  • Skin irritation under the breasts
  • Shoulder grooving caused by the bra

What Can Breast Reduction Surgery Do for Me?

If your breasts are too large and are not in proportion with your body, then undergoing breast reduction can help in a great way. A breast reduction surgery does the following:

  • Reduces the chronic pain associated with heaviness
  • Reduces your breasts’ volume and lifts the breasts
  • Corrects the asymmetry of your breasts
  • Improves your self-esteem
  • Changes your appearance and makes you look slimmer and more youthful

How Do I Prepare for the Breast Reduction Surgery?

During your initial consultation, the surgeon will review your medical history and will ask about your overall health. The surgeon also asks you about the desired size and shape of your breasts.  The surgeon also explains the possible risks and benefits of the procedure. The surgeon then takes pictures of your breasts for medical records before the procedure and will also measure your breasts.

Before undergoing breast reduction surgery, the following needs to be done:

  • A mammogram
  • You should avoid smoking for at least 3 weeks before surgery
  • Avoid using anti-inflammatory and aspirin medications and blood thinning medication to prevent bleeding during the procedure

What Happens During the Breast Reduction Procedure?

  • The breast reduction procedure is performed under general anesthesia and it takes around 3 to 4 hours.
  • The excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. This reshapes and reduces the size of your breasts.
  •  The nipples are also moved to fit into the new shape of your breasts, ultimately making your breasts smaller, perky and youthful.

Recovery After the Procedure

  • After the breast reduction procedure, your breasts will be covered with bandages and they are removed after 48 hours.
  • You should wear a surgical bra to prevent swelling and to let your breasts heal. Drains may be inserted under your arms to drain the fluid.
  • The surgeon may prescribe antibiotics and painkiller medications to prevent the risk of infection and to deal with pain following the procedure.
  • For the first few days, your breasts may be swollen and become tender to the touch.
  • You should also avoid raising your arms beyond 30 degrees for 2 weeks.
  • You should avoid lifting heavy objects for around 4 weeks after the procedure. After 4 to 6 weeks, you can start doing physical activities as your breasts heal.

Results After Breast Reduction

You will notice a reduction in the size of your breast as well as symptoms after the procedure and also make your breasts symmetrical. Breast reduction surgery also relieves your pain and increases your ability to take part in physical activities. The scars also become lighter and less visible.

Though the results of breast reduction are long-term, factors such as weight changes, pregnancy, etc. can change the shape of your breasts.
